ABOUT THE ARTIST: Eyvind Earle (1916–2000) was a groundbreaking artist and production designer whose work on Disney’s Sleeping Beauty(1959) cemented his place as one of animation’s most influential visionaries. Tasked with creating a distinctive look for the film, Earle developed a striking, stylized aesthetic inspired by medieval art, Gothic tapestries, and illuminated manuscripts. His intricate, tapestry-like backgrounds featured elongated forms, geometric shapes, and vivid color contrasts, giving Sleeping Beauty a timeless, storybook quality unlike anything seen before in animation.

As the film’s production designer, Earle not only painted hundreds of breathtaking background pieces but also established the overall artistic direction, unifying characters and settings into a cohesive and visually stunning world. His work set a new standard for animated films, combining modernist influences with classical techniques to create a unique visual experience.

Though Earle left Disney shortly after the film’s completion, his work on Sleeping Beauty remains a high point in animation history. The film’s artistic legacy continues to be celebrated for its bold departure from Disney’s traditional style, and Earle’s backgrounds are highly collectible for their beauty and craftsmanship. His visionary designs continue to inspire artists and filmmakers, solidifying his place as one of animation’s most influential figures.
